1851 through to the early 1860’s was a period of discovery, prosperity and population growth for Victoria. The gold rush was the main cause of discovery. It brought about an influx of people as they flocked in their hundreds hoping to get a piece of the rush of gold that the sunburnt sands of Ballarat.
